THE FARM
At Ysgubor, everything begins on the farm. From caring for our animals to producing quality meat with honesty and respect for the land, farming is at the heart of what we do. Rooted in tradition and driven by a genuine passion for rural life, we take pride in sharing a little of our world with you.
Welcome to YSGUBOR HEN
We are more than just a campsite, but a working farm full of new beginnings.
We are Byron & Lola and our farm is situated right on the tip of the Llyn, on a secret headland where clean, salty-sea air meets untouched, green jurassic landscapes. We are pig and sheep farmers, producing high quality, organic and free ranged pork and lamb for restaurants and local customers.
The farm itself is over 250 years old, bordered by cliffs and the ocean, the land is hilly and open, with a small Oak tree wood, where our mangalitza pigs forage, it offers a rich lifestyle for livestock: hills of clover fields, fresh salty sea air, exploration and mind stimulation and most importantly- a life closer to the wild side. A beautiful land with a special touch, which blesses all of our animals for a better life and tastier product. We started back in 2021, with nothing but a shovel and a dream.
The farm has been kept as such since the early 1700’s, but was sold and left empty since the 1970’s. It was our dream to restore the spark this farm used to have and pump it back up with life! We worked day and night to revive the farm land and farm house, bringing the character and lost purpose back to the surface. Now we have pigs and sheep, ducks and chickens, turkeys and goats roaming and grazing every square inch of our farm like they did 100 years ago!
Byron and Lola have Spanish and Cypriot roots, which we bring into our farming approach and protocols. We believe our families food and farming traditions, mixed with the welsh landscape and agricultural traditions is a recipe for a unique and tasty product, whether it be lamb or pork. Our love for tradition and our natural urges of innovation have led us on an experimental path of farming that can offer food that tastefully stands out from the rest, and can change your experience of what real tasty and olmeat really tastes like.
WHAT WE DO
We have a plethora of farm animals at Ysgubor Hen, Goats, sheep, ducks,
turkeys, but as previously mentioned, we predominantly farm pig’s and sheep.
We are very proud to say we are BPA assured mangalitsa breeders.
What is mangalitsa? Let us tell you;
The Mangalitisa pig breed is a rare breed of European pig, predominantly
farmed in Spain, Italy and Hungary for its unique marbling meat and curing
properties.
It’s rich and flavorful meat, excellent for charcuterie and various
culinary uses, make the mangalitsa pig one of the most favoured pig breeds in
the world, with its pork being used in Michelin star restaurants.
All our breeding stock comes from verified bloodlines in Europe, ensuring top-quality Mangalitsa pork. With only a few BPA registered breeders in the UK, this makes our piggies a rare commodity for this country. Originating in Hungary and domesticated across Europe, the Mangalitsa breed is prized for its dark, marbled, and juicy meat.
Interestingly, Spanish producers have favored this breed, making Mangalitza’s a central breed to the traditional production of Iberico ham and chorizo, a technique revitalized by a Spanish farmer using this very breed.
Our pigs graze on our house field, which is our clover field right by the house, as well as our oak tree wood, littered with apple trees and acorns which help the flavour immensely. And you cannot forget the beautiful view these pigs enjoy with their meals.
We believe all these elements put together, creates a taste of pork like no where else. If you don’t believe us, come down to the shop and grab some!
Our flock of sheep are native to Cymru. With welsh weather and terrain being unforgiving and unique, it is important to rear a breed that is native and equipped to thrive in these conditions. The Tregaron sheep are a larger version of there welsh mountain sheep. Native to the coast and mountains here in Gwynedd, our flock sits very comfortably on our cliffs and hills at farm. Tregaron are known for their larger size carcass (for a welsh breed) and deliciously rich flavored meat, valued for its sweet, succulent attributes.
We do not feed any extra feed too sheep but Hay in the winter. Our sheep enjoy clover rich fields and our flowery grass meadows. Come down to the shop and try some of our lamb for yourself!
MEET SOME OF THE TEAM
Now, the farm and It’s produce cannot be discussed without tributing to our hard working team of breeding stock. We have pigs, sheep and goats that we absolutely adore for both their hard work and personalities! A farms breeding stock are the key components of that keep the lifecycle of the farm ticking. From sires to sows, ewes to rams, all play a vital role in your farms production, and that makes them part of the family! Please take a look at the gallery below and learn about some of our farm family.
PICKLE & PETER
Some of you may already know Pickle and Pete If you have stayed with us from 2025. As these 2 pigs are our campsite mascots! Kune-Kune breed, coming all the way from NEW ZEALAND! They do not serve much important purpose on the farm but keeping the mum pigs company when they’re having a break from the piglets. Pickle and Peter serve a more important purpose on the
campsite, putting smiles on our campers faces and giving everyone a good laugh rain or shine! A fun fact about the Kune Kune breed of pig: They have little piri-piri waddles on their chin! A very strange but hilariously feature! You can meet Pickle and Peter on site at our eating zoo experiences.
YODA, MARGE & MANGA
INTRODUCING OUR THREE MAIN BREEDERS FOR OUR MANGALITZA PORK: YODA, MARGE AND MANGA. Our 3 mangalitza sows are the most treasured
stock on the farm, producing purebred mangalitza pork for restaurants and campsite customers all over. We sell to restaurants such as ‘the Blackfriars’ and ‘The horse and jockey’ in Manchester, plus many more! Our Mangalitza pigs are often called the “Woolly Pigs” because of their thick, curly coats that make them look more like sheep than pigs. Originating from Hungary in
the 19th century, this rare heritage breed is famous for producing some of the finest pork in the world. Their slow-grown, richly marbled meat is prized by chefs for its incredible flavour, tenderness, and melt-in-the mouth fat — often compared to Wagyu beef in the pork world. Also widely renowned for its great curing and charcuterie abilities- making them a big hit in Spain and Italy. All our Manga’s are pasture grazed, on an oak forrest by the sea. Mixing the fresh salty air and the sweet acorns to create the best tasting pork!
DIABLO
Diablo, the boar. Diablo is our mangalitsa sire. He sires all of our piglets and is one of a kind, for a breed that is one of a kind. His grandfather was an import from Europe, bringing in new genes and bloodlines, but also bringing us a most beautiful and colourful coat of fur. His genes allow for our piglets to take any colour- Black, blonde, tan, ginger, brown and even white! He is a pig of business Diablo, doesn’t socialise much, but knows what he is job is and does it very well. He spends his time rotating around the sows, enjoying big dinners and beautiful views of Porth Ceiriad, which is where is designated field is. He has a fierce and intimidating face on him, which is why we thought Diablo suited him perfectly.
CHIP AND HIS GIRLS
Our Golden Guernsey goats are some of the biggest characters on the farm. This rare British breed, recently awarded the official “Royal” title by the King, is known for its beautiful golden coats, friendly nature, and delicious milk. Our nanny goats are affectionately known as the farm’s “Mean Girls.” Always together, they spend their days bossing the other animals around —including Chip — and demanding extra feed at every opportunity thanks to being spoiled during our petting zoo experiences. Despite their attitude, they do a fantastic job grazing our cliff fields and produce incredible milk that makes the drama worthwhile. And of course they love their summer breaks on the campsite, where our guests love to pamper and dote over them. Then there’s Chip, our mischievous billy goat and firm farm favourite. He’s full of personality, always greeting us in the mornings and following us around the fields. When left alone, however, he enjoys breaking fences and causing chaos wherever he can! Chip is the sire to all our goats, but despite his confidence, there’s only one thing that keeps him in line — his nanny goats, who definitely wear the trousers around here.
VAN HELSING
Our busiest animal on the farm, the lamb daddy of the sheep, our Dutch Spotted Ram: Van Helsing. The name came from both his breed (Dutch spotted) and his beautiful coat and appearance, making him so handsome that has been described to, by some, to; ‘Slay’. He works the hardest but lives most lavish- with many girls on his to do list, and only a few months to do it, Van Helsing work all day and night making sure he fathers our gorgeous lamb year in and year out. His curvy shape and big body is passed onto his babies, making big lambs! He is super friendly and loves a scratch on the nose and neck. During spring he can be found grazing the fields at SANDY FARM CAMPSITE.
OUR FLOCK (TREGARON WELSH SHEEP)
The welsh improved sheep of Tregaron. A mouth full to say, as it is a great tasting sheep. A local mountain breed of sheep, bred for its larger size and succulent, fatty meat. Our flock of 40 Tregaron ewes are our main flock of sheep, grazing off of the costal path at Porth Ceiriad and hell’s mouth, on our farms rolling hill and cliff side fields. In there element, the sea air and clover rich fields, help bring out the best in flavours. Our sheep are happy and healthy, grazing over 50.acres of land, and having the privilege of lambing indoors when it comes. They may not be super friendly or very interested in making acquaintance with us much, but they sure look beautiful on any field they lay. We chose these sheep for they renowned flavour and welsh roots,
and they have never let us down!
